Getting Your Designation

Expand your knowledge and accelerate your career with a BOMI certificate or designation. No matter what your experience, your aspirations, or your schedule, we have a program track that can take your career to the next level. BOMI designation and certificate programs are designed for those interested in property and facilities management.

Designation or Certification

Certificates are sub-sets of the designations. In other words, the courses required to get one of the certificates are the same courses required to get one of the designations. The difference is that it takes fewer courses (three) to get a certificate than it does to get a designation (eight). The courses required for a designation cover a broad area of material while the courses required for a certificate focus on specific areas within the property or facility management field, hence the requirement for fewer courses.

Which do you take depends upon your career objectives. If you intend to take all the courses required for a designation then enrol in the designation. To get your designation will take approximately 3 years. If you take 3 courses per year, a certificate can take as little as one year to complete. Have a look at the requirements for each of the programs and assess your time commitment and career objectives before you make a selection.

Course Selection Suggestions

Regardless of the designation or certificate, there is no order in which the courses need to be taken. However, here are some helpful suggestions that might assist you in making your decision as to which course to take first and the order you take them in.

  • When you decide to enrol, call BOMI Canada first so we can help you select your first course.
  • Start with your strengths, if you have experience in one area start with these courses. People learn differently and as a result there are different options as far as how you can take the courses.
  • For the best learning experience you might want to mix it up and take some courses by self-study and others in a classroom session or alternatively the instructor led on-line courses depending upon their respective schedules.
  • Those courses which address areas where you have less experience could be taken in a classroom session or by instructor led-online, while courses that might come easier to you could be completed by self-study.
  • Some of the elective courses are applicable to both the RPA® and the FMA® designations. If you think you might want to get both designations at some point in the future, be sure to select an elective that applies to both programs to minimize the total number of courses you need to take to get both designations.
